Consortium Surveys

Institutional Research, Innovation, and Strategy (IRIS) is responsible for the administration of four national consortium surveys on the Notre Dame campus:

  • CIRP (Cooperative Institutional Research Program) Freshman Survey is conducted every other year (odd years); all incoming freshmen are invited to participate in August before arriving on campus.
  • CIRP College Senior Survey is conducted every other year (odd years) in Spring; all graduating seniors are asked to participate.
  • Survey of New Students from a consortium of highly selective private universities is conducted every other year (even years); all incoming freshmen are invited to participate in August before arriving on campus.
  • Senior Survey from a consortium of highly selective private universities is conducted every other year (even years) in Spring; all graduating seniors are asked to participate.

Consortium surveys provide peer comparative data that can be particularly useful for outcomes assessment and strategic planning.

IRIS serves as the consortial data steward on campus. Relevant aggregated data from consortium surveys are available to departments and administrators in alignment with data access policies. Sharing of comparative peer data is regulated by appropriate consortium policies.

Respondent-level data (raw/unaggregated) with identification information removed can only be used for IRIS-sponsored administrative research. Sharing of individually-identifiable data or investigation of students based on their survey responses is prohibited under consortium contracts.

The University policies do not allow using Notre Dame consortial survey data for non-administrative research and/or external publication.

CIRP survey instruments can be found on the Higher Education Research Institute’s website. Download the 2016 Senior Survey instrument. University administrative and academic units are encouraged to examine the instruments, identify items relevant to their unit operation, and place a data request with IRIS.
